Drawing Exercises

-Line and Proportion Workshop

Over the day we had four different still life arrangements to draw from like the one above, we had to focus on getting the lines and proportions correct. We had to work with a variety of media on a variety of papers.

Here is my impression of what I see in the above drawing. I like to work fast and we only had 5 minutes to do this drawing.

We had a range of activities to do throughout the day, one of the more entertaining ones was were we had to pair up, be blindfolded and the described the object by my partner James so i could draw what he saw. Above is the drawing that I produced, which we thought looked more like a cartoon dancing aubergine. The exercise was useful as it made me draw what my brain could hear instead of my brain telling me what I think I see.

I really like this drawing, the ink is completely the wrong colour but i just like the way that the water has caused the ink to run in different direction, it creates a feeling of texture.

This is my favourite piece of work of the day. I started drawing the mannequin in pen and working over with water to smudge it, I then got told to turn the drawing upside down and redraw it. Before I got chance to work over it with water we got told to pass our work to the person next to us, when I got my drawing back David had drawn on the necklace to my drawing. I then worked over it in thick black felt-tip. I love the monotone in the drawing.

-Texture and Surface Workshop

Once again we had different sets to draw throughout the day. However these were all about texture and been able to represent that with different media.

We were set a task to create samples of 6 different textures of the installation that we had in front of us. We then got to use them and this piece was the outcome. I don't like the piece but I think that it was really helpful for the rest of the day as I paid more attention to the textures and tried to recreate them with the right media.

This piece is made up of two layers. The bottom layer was the original drawing that i was going to use, I started by drawing the shape in charcoal and then I shaded in areas lightly with charcoal. I then thought that it piece needed more detail and found it hard to work over the charcoal, so I laid tracing paper onto and drew on with pen.

This is a chalk drawing of the setup shown a few above, I thought that the texture of the ripped netting over parer was really interesting to try to draw. I have zoomed in on a section and tried to represent the shading by working on top of the black paper that I prepared by rubbing lightly with chalk.

This drawing is my favourite of the day. I have used a piece of work from yesterday and worked over the top in pen and chalk drawing the same area as the above drawing. I like that the drawing is mixed media, I have used chalk, ink, pen and collage.

- Drawing Dressed Figures Workshop

Today we had to draw from dressed mannequins that were dotted around the room and create fashion drawings from them using techniques from both of the previous workshops.

This drawing reminds me of 1940's Fashion illustration. I just used the side of an oil to create the texture of wool and then just drew the rest with thick black pen. I think this is really effective technique for highlighting just one garment.

I decided to use a piece of paper that got ink spilt on it yesterday to work on with white crayon. I then borrowed a pen from someone sat next to me to highlight areas. The pen is a bit of a mystery what media it actually is, its like the consistency of tippex but like a felt-tip.

We had to prepare textured surface to work on top of and I like to work with masking tape so thought that it was worth a try. I started off working on the black paper with white chalk and the areas covered in masking tape in pen. I then highlighted and defined the areas in the other media, and use coloured chalk and oil pastels.

Because I didn't like drawing from the dressed mannequins I decided to draw people instead. A group of us decide to get someone in our class to model for us and draw. I much preferred to draw this way as the mannequins were far to ridged, this felt more natural and organic.

These two drawings were done in 5 minutes each. I think that there good for quick drawings and I managed to get more detail in then the mannequin drawings from earlier today.
